Dr. Neil Kumar

Dr. Neil Kumar is a Valrico native who recently joined Brandon Orthopedic Associates as an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopic procedures. Dr. Kumar is a graduate of Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed his orthopedic residency training at Drexel and was elected chief resident and an American Orthopaedic Association Emerging Leader. Dr. Kumar completed a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Connecticut/Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, one of the nation’s top institutions for adult and pediatric sports medicine.

Dr. Kumar has numerous publications in the areas of knee, shoulder, and elbow surgery. He has presented at several regional and national conferences and reviews scientific articles for the American Journal of Sports Medicine. He is currently a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine Society, and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Kumar specializes in adult and pediatric sports medicine, with expertise in knee ligament reconstruction, meniscus injuries, shoulder labrum tears and dislocation, and rotator cuff repair using minimally invasive techniques. He has a particular interest the treatment of young athletes, with proficiency in cartilage restoration, patella (kneecap) dislocation, and ACL surgery in children with open growth plates. Dr. Kumar is committed to the practice of evidence-based medicine so his patients can return to their active lifestyles as quickly and as safely as possible.

Mitchell R. Herrema, D.O.

Dr. Mitchell Herrema

Mitchell Herrema was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended Michigan State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology with honors. He also earned academic All-Big Ten while playing football there and was named MSU’s “Student Athlete of the Month” in April, 2001.

After completing his undergraduate degree, he remained at MSU to earn his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at the College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency training at McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan. He also did several specialty rotations including sports, trauma and total joint arthroplasty at the Detroit Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan. After residency, he completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction and total joint arthroplasty at Joint Implant Surgeons of Florida in Fort Myers, Florida. During fellowship, he performed or participated in over 1,000 total joint arthroplasty procedures, including anterior hip, partial knee resurfacing, revision hip and knee replacement, and total shoulder replacement. He received additional training in robotic- assisted partial knee and hip replacement as well as knee arthroscopy.

Dr. Herrema brings a conservative approach to his practice. He believes in trying nonsurgical options prior to knee or hip replacement. These options include injections, physical therapy, bracing and other anti- inflammatory agents to help reduce pain from arthritis. Dr. Herrema specializes in revisions of failed or older surgeries that need reparation or refinement.

Dr. Herrema enjoys traveling and outdoor activities including running, golf and kayaking. His wife, Heather, is a neurologist in St Petersburg, Florida, with specialty training in Parkinson’s disease. Dr Herrema and his wife enjoy spending time with their daughter, Emma.

Paul J. Pagano, M.D.

Dr. Pagano is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery with a subspecialty in Spine Surgery.

Dr. Pagano is an Orthopaedic Spine specialist whose practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of all disorders of the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral spine. Specific interests include adult deformity, minimally invasive spinal fusions, tumor resection and reconstruction, trauma and disc replacement surgery.

Dr. Pagano is a native of the Youngstown, Ohio area where he practiced for 13 years until relocating to the St. Petersburg area with his family in August of 2013. Dr. Pagano received his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1991 and received his degree in medicine at The Ohio State University in 1995. Dr. Pagano completed his internship and orthopaedic residency at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in 2000. Following his residency, Dr. Pagano performed a two part Orthopaedic Spine fellowship with Dr. Richard Holt in Louisville, Kentucky and with the late Dr. Thomas Whitecloud at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Dr. Pagano is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, The North American Spine Society and the American Medical Association. Dr. Pagano continues to use his engineering background as an active medical consultant holding patents in the field of spine surgery. He has also been an instructor in minimally invasive spinal surgery.

He earned his Doctorate of Medicine degree and completed his orthopaedic residency at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC.

Dr. Davis is currently Chief of Surgery at Edward White Hospital, having served as the Chief of the Division of Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery at Bayfront Medical Center for over 10 years.

He is well known in the Tampa Bay area for his extensive experience in the treatment of complex spinal disorders.

Michael R. Piazza, M.D.

He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Scranton in 1979, graduating Cum Laude. Dr. Piazza went on to earn his Medical Degree from the Milton S. Hershey Medical School of Penn State University in Hershey, Pennsylvania in 1983. Dr. Piazza completed his General Surgical Internship at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania in 1984. He completed his Orthopedic Residency program at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia in 1988, and furthered his medical training with an additional year of study in the prestigious Spine Fellowship Program at Pennsylvania Hospital — Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Dr. Piazza presently serves as chairman of the Spine Section of Morton Plant Hospital. He has been involved with extensive research in disorders of the spine, has published several articles relating to orthopaedics and spine surgery, and has served on several administrative committees for Morton F. Plant Hospital. Dr. Piazza’s expertise in orthopedics has enabled him to become involved in clinical research studies. He is presently actively involved in enrolling clinical research patients in both pharmacologic and device related spine research studies.

J. Byron Davidson, D.O.

He completed his undergraduate training at Texas A&M University, receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biomedical Sciences. He then attended the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center, Fort Worth, where he received a Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine in 1997. His Internship and Orthopaedic Residency followed at Ohio University in Columbus. He then completed a one year Spinal Reconstruction Fellowship at the Florida Spine Institute in Clearwater where he stayed on as a faculty member training spine fellows prior to joining Orthopaedic Specialties of Tampa Bay in 2006.

He is currently enrolling patients as the Primary Investigator and Co-investigator on several FDA Pivotal studies. Dr. Davidson is an Associate Clinical Professor at University of South Florida participating in Family Practice Residency and Sports Medicine Fellowship. He also serves on numerous committees at Morton Plant Hospital where he recently completed Chairmanship of the Department of Surgery.
