Dr. Peter Howard is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopy. Dr. Howard obtained his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. After his undergraduate education, Dr. Howard completed his medical degree at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He then trained in orthopedics at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker School of Medicine. During his final year, he served as chief resident at Bronson Methodist Hospital and Borgess Medical Center. Seeking additional sub-specialization; he trained in sports medicine and arthroscopy at the Houston Methodist Hospital. During his time there he worked with and cared for the Houston Astros, Texans, Dynamo, Rockets, the Rice University Owls, and many high school teams.

Dr. Howard’s areas of interest include the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and biologic therapies. Dr. Howard focuses on helping athletes and weekend warriors get back to full activity.

Joint Replacement: Dr. Howard specializes in Shoulder, Knee, and Hip replacements.

Biologic Treatments: Dr. Howard also received advanced training in Platelet Rich Plasma treatments, Bone Marrow Concentrate Aspirate Injections, and Stem Cell Injections. Dr. Howard is also FDA certified for MACI cartilage transplants.

Dr. Howard’s treatment philosophy is to try to exhaust all non-surgical options before considering surgery. He works with his patients to educate and explain their condition so that they can fully understand their treatment options. If surgery is a choice made by the patient, he believes in being with the patient through their full course of surgery and recovery. He also believes working closely with the physical and occupational therapists that care for his patients. Dr. Howard stays up to date on the newest treatment options so that he can provide the latest treatments to his patients.

Dr. Howard is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.

In his time off Dr. Howard enjoys fishing, boating, going to the beach, biking, and spending time with his wife and daughters.

Mitchell R. Herrema, D.O.

Dr. Mitchell Herrema

Mitchell Herrema was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended Michigan State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology with honors. He also earned academic All-Big Ten while playing football there and was named MSU’s “Student Athlete of the Month” in April, 2001.

After completing his undergraduate degree, he remained at MSU to earn his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at the College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency training at McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan. He also did several specialty rotations including sports, trauma and total joint arthroplasty at the Detroit Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan. After residency, he completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction and total joint arthroplasty at Joint Implant Surgeons of Florida in Fort Myers, Florida. During fellowship, he performed or participated in over 1,000 total joint arthroplasty procedures, including anterior hip, partial knee resurfacing, revision hip and knee replacement, and total shoulder replacement. He received additional training in robotic- assisted partial knee and hip replacement as well as knee arthroscopy.

Dr. Herrema brings a conservative approach to his practice. He believes in trying nonsurgical options prior to knee or hip replacement. These options include injections, physical therapy, bracing and other anti- inflammatory agents to help reduce pain from arthritis. Dr. Herrema specializes in revisions of failed or older surgeries that need reparation or refinement.

Dr. Herrema enjoys traveling and outdoor activities including running, golf and kayaking. His wife, Heather, is a neurologist in St Petersburg, Florida, with specialty training in Parkinson’s disease. Dr Herrema and his wife enjoy spending time with their daughter, Emma.

Specializes in general orthopaedics including fracture care, arthroscopy, pediatric orthopaedics and joint replacements (partial and total).

EDUCATION:

Dr. Torke graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. He completed medical school (M.D.) at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. He completed a general surgery internship and orthopaedic residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Dr. Torke also completed a pediatric orthopaedic residency at the Alfred I. Dupont Institute.

Dr. Torke is Board Certified through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS).

Dr. Choi graduated from the University of Indiana with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Biology. He completed medical school (M.D.) at the Indiana School of Medicine. He completed orthopaedic residency at the McLaren General Hospital in Flint, Michigan. Dr. Choi completed a fellowship in Foot and Ankle surgery in Warren, Michigan and a Hand surgery fellowship in Detroit.

Dr. Mirabello graduated Magna Cum Laude from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Science degree. He completed medical school (M.D.) at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Mirabello completed a surgical internship through the UCLA training program in Santa Barbara, California. He completed his orthopaedic residency at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in Manhattan, New York. Fellowship training in sports medicine with a focus in shoulder surgery was completed under Drs. James Andrews and William Clancy in Birmingham, Alabama.

He graduated from the University of Florida with his Bachelor of Science with Honors and earned his Medical Degree at the Medical College of Virginia.

David R. Whiddon, M.D., FAAOS completed his residency in Bone and Joint Sports Medicine Institute at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA. He did his fellowship in Adult Reconstruction at the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, MA.

Robert Maddalon, M.D., M.S.

Robert Maddalon, M.D., M.S.

He attended college at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, where he played varsity basketball. He graduated cum laude and later received a Master of Science degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Dr. Maddalon graduated from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. His orthopedic surgery training was performed at the Hospital of the Medical College of Pennsylvania.

Today, Dr. Maddalon specializes in total joint replacement and arthroscopic surgery. He has performed hundreds of minimally invasive (mini-incision) hip and knee replacements over the past several years. Additionally, he performs partial knee replacement surgery with excellent results.

Also, Dr. Maddalon uses the Zimmer gender specific knee replacement when indicated and computer-assisted surgery in many patients. He also performs the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing procedure in younger patients.

Dr. Maddalon has performed thousands of knee and shoulder arthroscopies as well as hip and knee replacements in the Brandon and Sun City areas since he began practicing in 1985. He is board certified. He has served as the Chief of Surgery and formerly on the Board of Trustees at Brandon Regional Hospital. Currently on the Board of Trustees at South Bay Hospital.

In the past, he has served as a team physician for several area high schools including Bloomingdale, Durant and Armwood.

John Okun, M.D.

John Okun, M.D.

He  was born and raised in New York. He attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire and was graduated magna cum laude. He attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He completed five years of training in General and Orthopedic Surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center Combined Orthopedic Surgery Program.

He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (Board Certified) and has been elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Okun was recertified by the Board in 1996 and 2006.

He is a member of the international Congress on Joint Replacement, the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society and is a consulting physician for the Divers Alert Network.

He specializes in joint replacement surgery, including Direct Anterior Approach (muscle sparing) Total Hip Replacement, Gender Specific and partial knee replacements, arthroscopic surgery of the knee, shoulder (rotator cuff repair) and other joints, treatment of complex fractures and orthopedic injuries, as well as most common orthopedic conditions.

Dr. John Okun has been in practice in Brandon, FL since 1984 and in Sun City Center since 1992. He is also on staff at Memorial Hospital of Tampa.

Dr. Okun has been team physician for a number of area high schools including Brandon, Bloomingdale, Durrant and Armwood. He has been team physician for a number of amateur, high school and junior hockey teams as well as the Tampa Bay Lightning NHL hockey team.

He has served as Chief of Surgery at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL and has held the position of Chief of Surgery at Exeter Hospital in Exeter, NH and Edward White Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL.

William E. Lowry, M.D.

William E. Lowry, M.D.

He received his Doctorate of Medicine degree from the University of Illinois, Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine in Chicago. His categorical orthopaedic internship and residency in Orthopaedic Surgery were completed at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.

Dr. Lowry is Chief of Orthopaedics and a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Team at Bayfront Medical Center, as well as Chief of Orthopaedics at St. Anthony’s Hospital.
