Dr. Shim graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a Bachelor of Science degree. He completed medical school (M.D.) at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Syracuse. Dr. Shim completed an internship in general surgery and his orthopaedic residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine / Montefiore Medical Center in New York. Fellowship training in spinal surgery was completed at New England Baptist Hospital.
Dr. Shim is Board Certified through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). He is also a Certified Independent Medical Examiner.

Dr. Shim is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the North American Spine Society (NASS), and the American College of Surgeons (ACS)
